US in contact with N. Korea, probing willingness to talk: Tillerson 10/1/2017 9:38:18 AM US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Chinese President Xi Jinping before their meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, on September 30, 2017 AFP, Sep. 30, 2017  - The United State has open channels of communication with North Korea and is investigating whether the regime is ready to enter talks on giving up its nuclear weapons programme, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Saturday. Tillerson's disclosure follows an escalating war of words between US President Donald Trump and North Korean strongman Kim Jong-Un. 'We are probing, so stay tuned,' he told reporters after talks with Chinese officials in Beijing. 'We ask. We have lines of communication with Pyongyang. We're not in a dark situation, a blackout, we have a couple, three channels open to Pyongyang.' 'We can talk to them, we do talk to them,' he said. Asked whether...

Time running out for Iran's nuclear deal

Image
Time running out for Iran's nuclear deal Workers talking at Bushehr nuclear site in Iran By Struan Stevenson UPI, September 29, 2017  -   With only days left before U.S. President Donald Trump must decide if he will grant the Iranian regime compliance with the nuclear deal on Oct. 15, the sands of time are rapidly running out for Tehran's rulers. Trump told a meeting of the  United Nations  in September that the deal was 'an embarrassment' to the United States. If Trump refuses to certify Iran's compliance with the deal, which seems highly likely, Congress will have 60 days to decide whether to reapply the crippling sanctions lifted by former President Barack Obama after the deal was signed. There is increasing speculation that the Iranian regime is financing North Korea's nuclear program, despite worldwide condemnation and the imposition of heavy sanctions against Kim Jong Un's rogue state even by China. A former U.S. senior dip...

Iran's People And The Nuclear Deal

Image
Iran's People And The Nuclear Deal Discussions are continuing as we speak over the fate of the highly controversial Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Advocates and opponents are going the limits to present their case prior to the October 15 th  deadline when US President Donald Trump is due to determine the status of Iran’s compliance with the accord. While this is a very important discussion, what unfortunately goes neglected is the status of the Iranian people who should be the first beneficiaries of such an accord that led to many sanctions being lifted from the Iranian regime. The ruling elite in Tehran have usurped the billions provided by the Obama administration in cash, waivers and sanctions reliefs to boost their ballistic missile program in violation of UN Security Council resolutions, prop up the Assad regime in Syria and its continuous killings of innocent people, and escalate their lethal meddling across the...

Putting Iran’s ‘violence, bloodshed and chaos’ in the spotlight

Image
President  Trump  deserves credit for his first-ever address to the U.N. General Assembly last week. While his comments on  Iran  made many of the gathered world leaders and diplomats feel uneasy, his observations were actually spot on. Since the 1979 Iranian revolution, no U.S. president has ever provided such a poignant description of the theocratic regime in  Iran . “The Iranian government masks a corrupt dictatorship behind the false guise of a democracy. It has turned a wealthy country with a rich history and culture into an economically depleted rogue state whose chief exports are violence, bloodshed, and chaos. The longest-suffering victims of  Iran ’s leaders are, in fact, its own people.” One’s view of  Mr. Trump ’s policies, character, or politics aside, it is almost impossible to disagree with this description because it very much defines the theocracy that has held 80 million Iranians hostage for the past four decades and crushed t...

Air strikes force hospital closures in northwest Syria: MSF Medical charity MSF says air strikes in Syrias northern Idlib province have taken an number of hospitals out of action GENEVA, AFP, 29 September 2017   -  A surge in bombing raids has forced hospitals to close in northwestern Syria, medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said Friday. The raids in the Idlib region and northern Hama have intensified since they began on September 19, and hospitals are closing either after being hit or for fear of being targeted, MSF said in a statement. After several months of calm, jihadist-controlled Idlib province has been the target of heavy air strikes by the regime and its Russian allies following a jihadist assault in Hama province. The main hospital in Hama was struck at dawn on Tuesday, MSF said, adding that no one was killed but the facility was shut down. Three other hospitals have not been operational since being bombed on September 19,...

Trump slow to implement Russia, Iran, North Korea sanctions law: senators Senator John McCain (R-AZ) looks on during a press conference WASHINGTON (Reuters) September 29, 2017  - Two months after signing it, President Donald Trump has not begun enforcing a law imposing new sanctions on Russia, Iran and North Korea, Senators John McCain and Ben Cardin said in a letter seen by Reuters on Friday. Also, with just two days to go, his administration has not provided information related to Russia’s defense and intelligence sectors required under the measure by Sunday, they said. Is the Argument for Regime Change in Iran Well Founded?

Image
Is the Argument for Regime Change in Iran Well Founded? The first factor that challenges the power of the ruling regime is the looming threat of uprisings. From an economic and social perspective   By Shahriar Kia  September 30, 2017 -- During his first address to the UN General Assembly in September, President Donald Trump offered a perspective on the people and the regime of Iran that starkly differed from that of his predecessors. He accurately attested that “The entire world understands that the good people of Iran want to change.” He described the Iran nuclear deal as “an embarrassment,” called off the Iranian regime for its export of “violence, bloodshed, and chaos,” and underlined that “Iran’s people are what their leaders fear most.” These remarks from the president of the United States are a positive signal after three decades of failed appeasement toward the mullahs ruling Iran. And the testament to the fact are the reactions of Ira...
