People Of Ahvaz Demonstrate Over Sabotaging Karoon Water In Iran
On Friday, December 22, 2017, a group of people in Ahvaz gathered in protest to the transferring of Karoon water project in Iran. People held up banners and chanted their demands to prevent the project from taking place.
Iranian officials have planned a water-channeling project based on distributing more water from Karun’s main tributaries to other provinces of Iran.
Karoon, a large river that originates from the Zard-Kuh slopes of the Bakhtiari Province in western Iran, receives many tributaries before passing through the capital of Khuzestan Province. Due to the quality and amount of Karun’s water, the largest agricultural industry and investment is in this region. But the water has been channeled to other provinces. Pipes and paths have multiplied to include waterways to Qom, Yazd, Kerman and new routes to Isfahan.
While Khuzestan is best known as Iran’s oil-rich province, it also lies in the fertile crescent, on some of the earth’s best water and land. More than 1m hectares of its land are agricultural, and it provides the country with crucial crops during the cold seasons. But this is changing as the rivers die out.
In his proposed budget to the regime’s parliament, Hassan Rouhani, the President of Iranian regime has allocated four distinct rows for the transfer of Karoon water.
After this budget is adopted in the parliament, environmental advocacy organizations cannot oppose the project from initiating and will not be able to prevent its destructive effects. This will put Khuzestan in a more disastrous environment.
People of Khuzestan call this project “the gradual death of Khuzestan plain”. On Friday, they gathered in protest against Rouhani’s decision to continue Karoon water transportation project.
The slogans that were chanted were:
– “Karun is my blood, Khuzestan is my life”
– “A drop of water decreases, Ahwaz will rise”
– “Oil and gas you looted, water you stole, nothing left till you take our blood”
